Yes! Back to basics is what its all about right now. Self love is key and what better way to love ourselves = nourish ourselves. I'm proud of you! This is a reminder for me to take better care of myself as well.

Wow, My homie sent me this link because I to am goin to Ghana. This will be my 2nd trip. My experience was different from yours, yet the same. I as I read, tears of joy welled in my eyes. I was on Rockstone's tour in 99'. The trip changed my life in a wonderful way. I lived an African American's Dream. I performed in Cape Coast Castle. I danced in celebration as shooting stars streaked above my head, I took it as a sign from God. I finally and triuphantly Freed the souls of my enslaved ansestors and even though I fell in an open gutter on a major road (I thought I was going to die. from infection.), in that moment I knew Everything was going to be alright. I LOL, in retrospect Anyway. That's not even half of the sstories I have. I can't wait to expeience nw ones. Thank you for writing this blog... CiCi

Dear Akua, I hope I've found you well. Your writing and experiences therof gives good emotive writing with feeling, a real sense of purpose. Having been invited but not yet visited Ghana, I am made more aware of reason to make my way sometime soon. When I like you travel too a place of populace by our peoples, I also move, eat, drink and sleep with, well not quite but almost, the locals. I am presently looking at venturing to Africa for business and I know the shock of the past will be all around me. I am however really looking forward too going. Very good writing Akua, take care and enjoy the rest of your trip. Love Life Peace Karl -x-

Akua, Akua...I have been reading your blogs and wishing I was there with you...partly because I love Africa and have loved it since i first stepped foot on the continent in 1986 and partly to share wisdom. DO NOT let Africa take AFRICA from you. Please remember that just as your mind has been affected by enslavement, the African mind has been affected by colonization. On my visits home I seek out likeness as compared to differences. Often we have to teach our Brothers and Sisters there and not let them intimidate us. Take control!!!!!!!! There ARE revolutionary minds in Accra that have not been blinded by European rhetoric who understand why your skin color is what it is. Perhaps the environment you are in has not allowed you the opportunity to seek out and become involved with those individuals.

Many continental Africans feel the same way you do when THEY come to America...until they meet those of us here who welcome them into our homes and begin to share a dialogue that unites instead of separates us. It is not easy, what you are experiencing is not by accident. It has been put in place by the powers to be and your response to Africa is part of the plan. Do not give up on Africa...be careful of referring to yourself as an American...that means that YOUR history is HIS-STORY and your beginnings are simply enslavement.

When you return lets sit and chat over a cup of tea or chocolate. I miss running into you and the family! Take Care and Much Love..Yaa Asantewaa

Hey Akua:

You are not alone. I have experienced some of the same "differences" that you are experiencing. But that's all they are, "differences".

We as African-Americans travel to Africa with grandios(sic) ideas of what the motherland and her people will be like. When we get there it's different, but in a lot of ways, it's quite the same.

Your family there is being protective of you because they want you to have a safe experience. They feel responsible for you and I'm sure they are doing it in the most effective way they know how.

In an urban environment in many countries in Africa, the infrastructure is such that it's common to have utilities discontinued throughout the day. Try to find creative ways to deal with the outages.

As cliche as it sounds "it is what it is". Remember that while you can't alway effect the things that happen to you, you can effect the way to respond to such situations. Here's where the Serinity Prayer comes in. Change what you can (i.e your response to things) and let go of the rest. There are lots of great experiences awaiting you. Whenever you are ready. LOVE YOU!! LOVE YOU!!LOVE YOU!
